5 Seconds of Summer

by Lucille Barilla

Straddling the line between 1990s punk-pop and 2000s boy band pop, Five Seconds of Summer has found their niche in the music world through hard work, determination, and an incessant need to have lots of fun. Bringing the best that Australia has to offer to the music business, 5 Seconds of Summer is fun personified.

The band's pop punk influences are apparent in their music and attitude towards the business that has made them superstars. Not wanting just to be labeled as a boy band, the group has worked hard to break the mold set for them by the likes of One Direction, 'N Sync, and Backstreet Boys, who were the gold standard for boy bands in the industry for years.

Five Seconds of Summer released their debut EP, Unplugged, in June 2012 and, followed with a second EP, Somewhere New, in December 2012. In February 2014, they issued their debut single, “She Looks So Perfect,” through Capitol Records. “She Looks So Perfect” peaked at #1 on the Australian Singles chart, New Zealand Singles chart, Irish Singles chart, and the U.K. Singles chart, becoming only the fourth Australian band to reach the #1 spot in the U.K., and the first to do so in fourteen years.

Success didn't happen quickly. Although they seem like an overnight sensation, they became successful through hard work, determination, and a fire to succeed that far surpassed their peers. Call it a mixture of luck and tenacity. Here's how their story goes.
