This is a fictionalized story of a young Pawnee warrior, whose exploits and those of his tribe come under conflict from within and from warring factions while enduring both famine and drought along the Great Plains, a region that includes the states of Nebraska, Kansas, and parts of Colorado. The period takes place after the introduction of the horse to the North American continent, yet before the White Man had fully explored the West. As history would later attest, it was a time of transition, of radical change occurring between spring and summer, during what the Indians called the Moon of Making Fat (June), when buffalo grow lazy from grazing on grass. Most of all, it is a tale of a boy’s life journey into manhood, an indoctrination into the perils of the unknown, across prairie, mountain, and desert, to a place where life was born.
